Oakland University’s Honors College announced the creation of an Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) Lab at a recent event featuring leaders from industry and OU.

The event was held in collaboration with Connected Detroit Innovates, a collaborative made up of business leaders, entrepreneurial ecosystems and community advocates focused on transforming the Detroit-region into an engine of innovation.

Honors College Dean Graeme Harper was joined by guest presenters Gregg Garrett, CEO and managing director of CGS Advisors, and Chris Firestone, executive director of Global Digital Solutions at Xperience, in a discussion about how AR/VR technologies are being used today and how OU’s Honors College can collaborate with industry on contemporary and emerging AR/VR applications. Other guests in attendance came from Comerica, Amerisure Insurance, Plex, MadDog Technology and FEV Group and K&A Resource Group.

“We have a great infrastructure of high-value companies in the region that we need to build relationships with,” Harper said. “We want to start working together on sustainable innovation strategies where companies who are looking for future leaders in their fields can come and talk to the students that we’ve got here.”

During the event, students and industry leaders shared ideas about how Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality can used by business, government, academia and other fields to deliver an enhanced user experience. Examples include automotive design, military training, healthcare and medicine, space exploration and real estate.
