During its spring 2018 student commencement ceremonies, Oakland University will honor the professional, civic and philanthropic contributions of three outstanding American citizens with the highest honors it conveys – honorary doctoral degrees.
Automotive industry leader, Oakland University trustee emeritus and humanitarian David T. Fischer will be recognized for a lifetime of service. Having won professional acclaim from "Time Magazine," General Motors and Ford Motor Company, he has served as President and Chairman Emeritus of the North American International Auto Show.
As chairman and CEO of the Suburban Collection, Fischer has inspired employees to support organizations including the American Red Cross and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. He and his wife, Jennifer, have offered philanthropic support to the fight against cancer, improving the lives of children, enhancing education in Southeast Michigan and beyond, and supporting the arts. President Donald Trump recently nominated him to serve as Ambassador to Morocco.
Known by Detroit Red Wings fans as “Terrible” Ted Lindsay, Robert Blake Theodore Lindsay contributed to four Stanley Cup championships, was named an All-Star nine times and had the NHL Players Association award, which is given to the most outstanding player in the regular season, named in his honor.
Lindsay was widely know as a staunch advocate of fellow players, and joined in the Detroit Red Wings Alumni Association in raising funds for a variety of children's charities. In 2001, he created the Ted Lindsay Foundation, which has since raised more than $4 million to support individuals with autism spectrum disorders. The foundation also partnered with Beaumont Health to promote autism research and educational programs.
Former President and CEO of Wellpoint Angela Braly is an accomplished and respected business executive who has also garnered attention for her philanthropy and civic leadership.
Having created pathways for women to pursue leadership roles and set an admirable standard for balancing family and work life, Braly has also distinguished herself as a visionary community leader through involvement with the United Way, the Angela and Doug Braly Empowerment Match program and the Policy Circle.
Both Fischer and Braly will receive honorary doctor of science degrees. Lindsay will receive an honorary doctor of humanities degree.
