Wadsworth elevated to interim Dean of Students

Michael Wadsworth has been named interim Dean of Students for Oakland University’s Division of Student Affairs & Diversity. He was elevated to the role upon the retirement of longtime Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students Nancy Marshall (formerly Schmitz). Marshall’s career at Oakland spanned 35 years.

“Nancy leaves a stellar legacy of providing strategic leadership that consistently improved direct student support services such as tutoring, academic advising, counseling and health services,” Glenn McIntosh, Vice President for Student Affairs and Chief Diversity Officer said. “She will be missed, but her many contributions to Oakland will never be forgotten.”

Wadsworth will assume this new role on Monday, October 1.

“Michael has proven himself as a great ambassador of the university over the past four years,” McIntosh added in reference to Wadsworth. “He is respected by faculty, staff and students alike and will do an excellent job moving into this leadership role as we begin a national search to find a permanent replacement for the role.”

Wadsworth joined Oakland University in August 2014 and has more than 20 years of career experience in student affairs roles. Prior to joining OU, Wadsworth served as director for Residential Life at Albion College. He has also served in leadership roles at the University of Maryland, University of Southern Mississippi, Old Dominion University and West Virginia Wesleyan College.

A native of Durand, Michigan, Wadsworth holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Oakland University and a master’s degree in Educational Administration from Kent State University.

In his position as assistant dean of students, Wadsworth has handled student conduct matters and served as OU’s deputy Title IX coordinator, working to ensure compliance with federal laws prohibiting discrimination based on sex in educational programs and activities. Another role for Wadsworth has been acting as an ombudsman; advising and counseling students as well as helping solve a wide range of problems and overcome any obstacles related to the university experience.
