Oakland University’s Office of Veterans Support Services, in collaboration with various campus and community partners, will recognize the contributions of veterans at OU, and across the nation, with a series of events from November 11-15.
Kickoff to Veterans Week: Day of Service

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to write Holiday Cards to Veterans in residence at the two VA retirement homes in Michigan. The AP Assembly and OU Writing Center are coordinating with Student Veterans of OU for this event.

Released in 2017, the film follows a group of Iraq war veterans as they struggle to integrate back into family and civilian life. It is based on the 2013 non-fiction book of the same name by Washington Post reporter David Finkel, who wrote about veterans of the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment returning to the Fort Riley, Kansas area following a 15-month deployment in Iraq in 2007.

Veterans Week Featured Event: Keynote Speaker James McCloughan, Presidential Medal of Honor recipient and former U.S. Army soldier and Vietnam War veteran

Michigan native James McCloughan was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions “of gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty” in May 1969 during the battle of Battle of Nui Yon Hill in the Republic of Vietnam. McCloughan is credited with saving the lives of at least 10 soldiers while being wounded several times during the fight.
Along with OU Veterans Support Services, Veterans Week is supported by OU Student Affairs and Diversity, Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and Student Veterans of Oakland University.
