Carly Uhrig is a music lecturer (Foundations of Rock) for the Oakland University School of Music, Theatre and Dance. Carly was recently nominated for the university's Excellence in Teaching Award and is consistently recognized as a faculty/staff "Impact Player" by Oakland University student-athletes. From 2011-2023, Carly was the Marketing Manager for the Oakland University School of Music, Theatre and Dance and recently graduated from the OU Leadership Academy. Prior to her time at OU, she was the Director of Bands for the Madison District Public Schools, where she was awarded the district’s Excellence in Teaching award. Under her direction, the Madison Bands performed at the Hancock Observatory in Chicago and Lincoln Center in New York City, as well as received Division I ratings in both marching and concert festivals at the district and state levels. Carly holds music degrees from both the University of Michigan (BM, Music Education) and New York University (MA, Music Business.) During her time in New York, Carly was employed by the New York Youth Symphony, Cherry Lane Music Publishing, and the American Symphony Orchestra. Carly studied songwriting with film composer Ronald Sadoff and Grammy-winning songwriter Phil Galdston and spent a year apprenticing with children’s music superstar, Laurie Berkner. Her master’s thesis, "Rock Out With Your Juice Box!" examines the emergence and endurance of the kindie rock movement. Carly is an active songwriter, as well as a performer; she plays trumpet, piano, guitar and has made guest recording appearances on the trumpet for a variety of rock artists. Carly is currently the Director of Marketing at the Flint Institute of Music and lives in Rochester Hills with her husband David and sons Ray and Ben.
