The Oakland Symphony Orchestra (OSO), Oakland University’s orchestra-in-residence, will present the second concert of its 2017-18 performance season at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5 in Varner Recital Hall.

The program will feature Le corsair, Op. 21 by Hector Berlioz; Introduction and Allegro, Op. 47 by Edward Elgar, with guest conductor Alan MacNair; Suite Francaise by Francis Poulenc; and Symphony No. 2, Op. 16 “The Four Temperaments” by Carl Nielsen.

“One of OU’s ‘hidden treasures,’ the OSO has a proud tradition of excellence dating back to 1976,” said Dr. Gregory Cunningham, conductor, who is beginning his 21st year at Oakland University, where he serves as music director the OSO, and professor of orchestral and wind conducting.

Now in its fifth decade of providing the OU community with outstanding live performances and symphonic repertoire, the OSO is comprised of professional musicians from throughout Southeastern Michigan and Northern Ohio, OU students, and OU faculty.

“An integral part of the instrumental performance curriculum at Oakland, many graduates of the OSO have gone on to prestigious graduate schools and conservatories, or are professionally active as performers and teachers throughout the world,” Cunningham said.

The OSO performs most of its concerts on the OU campus in Varner Hall, with its final annual performance held in Orchestra Hall in Detroit in collaboration with the Oakland University Symphony Chorus.
