The OU DECA team members put their skills, experience and knowledge to the test against 1,500 collegiate DECA members from eight countries.

Ten members of the OU DECA team traveled across the country to represent the Oakland business school at the Collegiate DECA International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, Calif. After the first round, two OU DECA teams and one individual advanced to the final stage of the competition.

The OU DECA team members put their skills, experience and knowledge to the test against 1,500 collegiate DECA members from eight countries. At each round, every team analyzed a business case challenge related to the competition category. From there, team members had an hour to develop, plan and practice a 15-minute recommendation which they presented to a panel of judges.

By the end of the competition, OU marketing students Stephanie Pini and Austen Pratt secured third place in the world for Event Planning. Erika Barker, actuarial science major, and Jahnavi Gudi, human resource management/management information science major, finished in the top 10 for International Marketing. Sara Jungwirth, marketing, finished 12th in Fashion Merchandising and Marketing.

For Pini and Pratt’s event, each team was challenged to coordinate all the details involved with opening a new hotel, including planning a job fair and launching a social media campaign.

“It was very in-depth and fun,” says Pratt, OU DECA president.

“Helping build this student organization over the last four years was a tremendous experience,” adds Pratt, who graduated in April. “Qualifying to compete and then placing in the final round at the international conference was an exhilarating way to end.”

In all, ten OU DECA members qualified to compete based on their results at the state competition. Those who qualified to attend the international conference included:

Amanda Abi-Samra and Rianna Goetting in sports and entertainment

Erika Barker and Jahnavi Gudi in international marketing

Dave Bork in travel and tourism

Rianna Goetting in food service management

Randy Grosser and Niko Roukounakis in financial statement analysis

Sara Jungwirth in fashion merchandising

Anthony Piazza in marketing management
