New graduate certificate strengthens business leadership for early to mid-career professionals

Professionals across all organizational levels can unlock their leadership potential and strengthen their management capabilities with the new Leadership in Business graduate certificate program at Oakland University.

Available winter 2022, the 15-credit graduate-level certificate program is open to bachelor- or masters-prepared professionals seeking to expand their skills to lead in a dynamic workplace, including strategic planning, change management, problem solving, collaboration and team building. A commitment to professional growth in leadership distinguishes professionals aspiring to lead high-profile assignments or advance in their careers.

“Leadership development is beneficial to employees across the board,” said Janell Townsend, chair, Department of Management and Marketing, and professor of marketing, at OU’s School of Business Administration. “Nurturing strategic leadership competencies beyond upper management and the few who are close to the C-suite pays dividends for employees as well as organizations.”

Designed to assist early and mid-career professionals develop the mindset, confidence and skills to lead projects and teams, courses in the new graduate certificate program are available on campus, online or in a hybrid format.

“The program focuses on the essentials of leadership, targeting early career professionals planning on a management track, or early-to-mid- career professionals who are transitioning from a technical track to a management career path,” Townsend said.

The Leadership in Business graduate certificate includes two required courses, organizational behavior and leadership and group performance, and three electives which allow students to tailor their path.

Students learn directly from full-time faculty experts who are engaged in leadership research and actively involved in the nationally recognized Leadership Academy. Credits earned can be applied to an Oakland University MBA. The option of face-to-face, evening, online and hybrid courses offer students the flexibility to balance professional development with professional and personal commitments.
