Brian Hlavaty is a special lecturer and director of the Journalism Department Internship Program. He joined the department in 2009 after spending more than three decades as a journalist, most of it at The Saginaw News where he was news editor in charge of the copy desk. For his first eight years at OU, he also served as the adviser to the Saginaw Valley State University student newspaper, The Valley Vanguard.
During his early years in the business, he was a reporter at Mount Pleasant, Cadillac and Kalispell, a small town tucked in the northwest corner of Montana next to Glacier National Park. It was there on winding mountain roads that he learned to ride bikes faster than bears could run.
Over the years, Hlavaty's been a jogger, a sailor, a backpacker and, most recently, a pre-dawn golfer. He says teeing off 10 minutes before dawn is a great way to beat the crowds.
The Warren native graduated from Central Michigan University and Macomb Community College. He resides in Saginaw with his wife, Diane, who teaches at SVSU.
