Interests
My research interests have focused generally on counseling issues that influence historically oppressed communities. Although my research agenda is clearly directed toward the examination of the biopsychosocial consequences associated with the oppression of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other non-heterosexual/non-binary (LGBTQ+) individuals, it is also multifaceted. Under the umbrella of LGBTQ+ counseling issues, my scholarship can be sub-categorized into three areas: (a) substance use disorders (SUDs) and process addictions, (b) multicultural counseling and oppression, and (c) health issues among men who have sex with men (MSM). My interest in these issues stems from reflections on my experiences and professional questions that inspired me to research my clients’ descriptions of their various experiences and struggles. To study these areas, I use a range of quantitative and qualitative methodologies in order to balance the advantages and limitations of specific techniques. In sum, I have numerous publications in prestigious peer-reviewed journals and regularly give presentations and workshops nationally and internationally in the areas of substance use disorders, sexual compulsivity, LGBTQ+ issues, male body image, social justice and advocacy in counseling.

My personal passions include running road and trail races. biking, working out and crossfit training. I need to do these activities because I am also a major foodie. Finally, I am a dog-dad to Georgia and Luna who were rescued from the 2017 Hurricane Harvey in Houston, TX.

Personal Information
My service and leadership within the counseling profession is extensive. I am a member of the American Counseling Association's Ethics Committee, co-Chair of ACA's Gender Equity Task Force, and Past-President of the Society for Sexual, Affectional, Intersex, and Gender Expansive Identities (SAIGE), a division of ACA. I am finishing up my sixth year as Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of LGBTQ Issues in Counseling and am an Editorial Review Board member for the Journal for Addictions and Offender Counseling and the Journal of Counseling Sexology and Sexual Wellness. I also value giving back to the community, and as such, I volunteer as a support group facilitator leading a support group for transgender and non-binary teens with a local organization called Stand with Trans.
