Service Learning in Hong Kong

This study abroad program to Hong Kong is designed for students interested in international social work and service learning. This course involves three on-campus meetings before departing and a 10-day study abroad program to Hong Kong and is based on experiential education as a model for teaching and learning. This program will offer students a global perspective and understanding of social problems, practice approaches and policies in other countries, with a specific focus on Hong Kong through site visits at different government and non-governmental social service agencies and organizations. The next program dates TBD.

The travel study program to Hong Kong includes three on-campus meetings before departing and a 10-day study program to Hong Kong.

What You
Will learn
Students will learn about the history and development of social work practices, global social issues and global interdependence. Global issues to be discussed include poverty, child labor, adoption and resettlement of refugees and immigrants. Students will critically analyze and compare human rights issues, human relationships, global social work agendas, and strengths and limitations of initiatives and intervention in the United States and Hong Kong. The knowledge and experience gained will provide students with an understanding of international practice and policies along with the need for competency in international practice at the individual, family, group community and organizational levels.

Summer clothing, good walking shoes, umbrella and rain coat, smart casual clothing for all site visits.

  1. To register for this program, students must obtain the permission of the instructor or faculty.
  2. Students must enroll in SW395: International Social Work and Service Learning course, a 4-credit course.
  3. Students must be in good academic standing.
  4. Students must have a passport valid for 6 months at the time of travel in July 2019.
