Honoring a Legacy of Safety

The Hoffmann Family’s contributions and scholarship support have created an impressive legacy of leadership in the field of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), for Oakland University, and its School of Health Sciences (SHS).

Dr. John Hoffmann established Safety Engineering Laboratories, Inc. in the 1980s, for the betterment of our region and nation. Through a voluntary role on the School of Health Sciences’ EHS Industry Advisory Board (IAB), he greatly helped our developing EHS academic programs to mature and grow. Serving thoughtfully for decades, he established the Safety Engineering Lab Scholarship Endowment, providing scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students studying EHS and Safety Management.

Dr. Donald Hoffmann, upon joining his father at Safety Engineering Laboratories, Inc., steadfastly has supported both SHS and the EHS profession. With his father's retirement in the early 2010s, Don continued to guide their successful company through wonderful growth, and under his leadership expanded their endowed scholarship program to support an ever-greater number of students annually.

Alexander Hoffmann, Don’s son, with his Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, is now pursuing a doctorate in Chemical Engineering and continuing on the family legacy at Safety Engineering Laboratories.

Truly, the Hoffmann family's academic, intellectual, professional and philanthropic contributions have been instrumental in helping create the meaningful impact that the School of Health Sciences and its graduates are having on the field of Environmental Health and Safety, each and every day — delivering education, leadership and meaningful scientific practices to keep people, property and the environment safe in the community, state, country and beyond.
