About Meadow Brook Writing Project
The Meadow Brook Writing Project (MBWP) at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, brings the writing project model to parts of the Detroit metropolitan area. This extensive area, with a population of close to 4 million, is also served by the Oakland Writing Project in Ann Arbor and the Eastern Michigan Writing Project in Ypsilanti. The MBWP concentrates its efforts in the Detroit School District, Macomb County, Oakland Community College and the Public School Academies of Oakland University. We are affiliated with the Urban Sites Network. Visit the National Writing Project website for more information about this federally funded national program.
The Meadow Brook Writing Project name comes from Meadow Brook Hall, the 100-room Tudor mansion given to Michigan State University by Matilda Dodge Wilson for the establishment of a branch campus. The former branch is now a separate state university, Oakland University, with nearly 18,000 students. Oakland University's highest-quality enterprises carry the Meadow Brook name including Meadow Brook Music Festival, the summer home of the Detroit Symphony, and Meadow Brook Theatre, a professional theatre company. In addition to naming these quality enterprises, "Meadow Brook" implies the principal sources of local prosperity: automotive manufacturing (Dodge) and lumber processing (Wilson).
