Today, Oakland is one of 15 public universities in Michigan. Oakland has an enrollment exceeding 20,711 students and a Carnegie classification of doctoral/research university-intensive.
Beaumont is a not-for-profit organization formed by Beaumont Health System, Botsford Health Care and Oakwood Healthcare to provide high quality, efficient, accessible services in a caring environment for southeastern Michigan residents and beyond.
OUWB medical students train at three of the eight Beaumont Health Hospitals: Beaumont Royal Oak, Beaumont Troy, and Beaumont Grosse Pointe.
The partnership between Oakland University and Beaumont Health
Oakland and Beaumont both recognized the negative impact that a physician shortage would have on the quality of health care available to the residents of Michigan. Following exploratory discussions, including discussions with community leaders, it was concluded that the combined faculty, staff and infrastructure resources of Oakland and Beaumont provide a remarkably strong base on which to build a new medical school to help satisfy the demand for physicians in Michigan and the nation.
In January 2007, Oakland and Beaumont submitted a letter of intent to the LCME to initiate the formal process of accrediting a new allopathic medical school. The initiative to fund a new medical school was approved by both the Beaumont Hospital Board of Directors and the Oakland University Board of Trustees on July 31, 2008.
On February 10, 2015, the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine was granted full accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. This five-year accreditation fulfills a promise Oakland University and Beaumont Health leaders made six years ago to build an innovative new medical school in Oakland County committed to providing exceptional training for new physicians.
Accreditation signifies that national standards for structure, function, and performance are met by a medical school's education program leading to the M.D. degree. LCME accreditation is required for schools to receive federal grants for medical education and to participate in federal loan programs. Students and graduates of LCME-accredited medical schools are eligible to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). These graduates also have eligibility to enter residencies approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Graduating from an LCME-accredited U.S. school and passing the national licensing examinations are accepted as prerequisites for medical licensure in most states ( Source: LCME).
Why is LCME accreditation important?
Oakland University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Universities. In 2009 the Higher Learning Commission of the NCA conducted a comprehensive visit of Oakland University. The next comprehensive visit is not scheduled until 2019 and no follow up reports or visits were required. The university requested a focused visit on the School of Medicine and it was conducted in January 2010.

From its start as a community hospital, Beaumont’s Royal Oak campus has become a major academic and referral center with Level 1 trauma status and Michigan's first Magnet-designated hospital for nursing excellence. The hospital ranks first in the United States for inpatient admissions and second for its number of surgeries. A second Beaumont hospital opened in Troy in 1977 as a 200-bed acute care community teaching hospital. It is now among the nation's highest-volume community hospitals with 361 beds, and is third for its number of admissions and fourth in surgeries among hospitals of its size. In October 2007, Beaumont became a regional health provider when it acquired a third community hospital with 289 beds in Grosse Pointe.
Ninety-one medical and surgical specialties are represented on the Beaumont medical staffs of more than 3,700 physicians. Beaumont’s current medical graduate education enterprise encompasses 40 programs all accredited with the maximum accreditation (19 residencies and 21 fellowships). Beaumont has sponsored M3 clerkships and M4 electives since the mid 1960s. Beaumont physicians and physician-educators have significant experience with the instruction of medical students in a clinical setting for core clerkships (Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, OBGYN, Surgery, Family Medicine, and Psychiatry).

Founding Dean and Professor of Biomedical Sciences,
Pathology and Ophthalmology
Dr. Folberg became Founding Dean of the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in September, 2008. He came to the School of Medicine from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) where he was the Frances B. Geever Professor of Pathology and Head of the Department of Pathology. He was also a Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at UIC.
Dr. Folberg received a BA degree from LaSalle College in Philadelphia (now LaSalle University) and his M.D. degree from Temple University. He is board certified in Anatomic Pathology and Ophthalmology. He began his academic career at Thomas Jefferson University Medical School in 1982, and moved in 1984 to the University of Iowa where he became the first Frederick C. Blodi Professor of Ophthalmology. He moved to UIC in 2000.
Dr. Folberg is a clinician scientist who was funded for 20 years by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study the biology of uveal melanoma. While head of pathology at UIC, he served as deputy director of the University of Illinois Cancer Center from 2003 to 2005. He has published more than 200 original articles and book chapters. He is recognized for innovation in medical education and continues to teach pathology of the eye to medical institutions within and outside the United States. He also continues his consultation practice of ophthalmic pathology at Beaumont Health where he is William Beaumont Hospital's Chief Academic Officer.
Dr. Folberg brings experience in developing academic cultures that are high achieving, self actualizing, and humanistic to the new Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. At the new medical school, he has recruited a diverse and talented team to design and implement an innovative paradigm for medical education.

Dr. Afonso received her M.B.B.S. and M.D. degree from the University of Mumbai in India and received her M.R.C.P. degree from the Royal College of Physicians in the United Kingdom. Teaching both medical students and residents has always been a central part of her career as an academic physician. Since 1992 she has been a member of the teaching faculty of the Department of Internal Medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine. As the Director of the Physical Diagnosis Course at the Wayne State University School of Medicine, Dr. Afonso has developed and implemented innovative medical education programs for medical students such as the use of standardized patients. She was instrumental in the introduction of several novel initiatives in the medical school curriculum including inter-professional education and the introduction of bedside ultrasound teaching into the physical diagnosis course. Her research projects have a focus on novel curriculum initiatives in medical education and women’s health issues.

Dr. Devries has served on the Board of Directors of the national Ambulatory Pediatric Association (APA) and chaired its Education Committee. He has led workshops & presented Faculty Development seminars & research papers at national meetings. Dr. Devries has earned recognition at both local and national levels, including multiple teaching awards from medical students and residents, community service leadership awards, and the APA’s first Award for Innovation in Pediatric Education.

Dr. Kennedy received a B.S. in pharmacy from St. Louis College of Pharmacy and his Ph.D. from University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1981 before doing postdoctoral training at Michigan State University. His research in cardiovascular pharmacology and pathophysiology has resulted in more than 105 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has been funded by a variety of agencies including the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Recently, he has focused his research efforts on development of the Chicago Area Patient Centered Outcomes Research Network (CAPriCORN), a clinical data research network funded by the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).

Our friend and colleague, Michele D. Raible, M.D., Pharm.D, passed away on June 21, 2010 while undergoing treatment for leukemia. Michele was diagnosed with leukemia in February, 2010, two days after the school received preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee for Medical Education.
Dr. Raible received her medical degree from the University of Missouri – Kansas City and completed graduate medical education programs in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Medical Oncology, followed by Anatomic and Pathology, Blood Banking / Transfusion Medicine and Hematopathology. She served as deputy head of pathology at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) until she joined our team in January, 2009. Michele is survived by her husband Bill Miles, M.D., assistant professor of psychiatry at the School of Medicine and a staff psychiatrist at Beaumont Health.
Michele was deeply committed to the innovative vision of the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. Her contributions to the school will live on as a legacy for our students and faculty in years to come.
Robert Noiva, Ph.D., associate dean of education programs, will carry on Michele’s work in administering and evaluating medical education programs of the medical school.

David Thomas, Ph.D., is the Assistant Dean for Medical Education. His primary role at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine (OUWB) is to oversee curriculum evaluation and student assessment programs. Dr. Thomas is a graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo, received his doctorate in Biological Sciences from Wayne State University, and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Thomas joined Wayne State University as a Research Assistant Professor in 2003 and was appointed Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2007. He became a founding faculty member and Master Educator in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at OUWB in 2011 and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2014. Dr. Thomas has held leadership positions in medical education at OUWB as Course Director for the Endocrine System course, Biomedical Sciences representative of the Academic Success Team, Chair of the Curriculum Evaluation Subcommittee and Secretary of the Curriculum Committee. Nationally, Dr. Thomas is a certified Team-Based Learning Consultant-Trainer of the TBL Collaborative (TBLC), currently Chairs the TBLC Educational Development Committee and is a member of the TBLC Steering Committee.
