Terry Kowalenko

Dr. Kowalenko joins Beaumont from the University of Michigan Health System, where he served as director of Continuous Professional Development for the University of Michigan Medical School. He also held a faculty appointment at the University of Michigan Medical School as clinical professor, Department of Emergency Medicine and Medical Education.

His earlier responsibilities have included program director, Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Michigan / St. Joseph Mercy Hospital; and program director, Department of Emergency Medicine, DMC / Sinai-Grace Hospital. He also served as an attending physician in Emergency Medicine at Henry Ford Hospital.

Dr. Kowalenko received his medical degree from the University of Chicago and did his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

An active researcher, Dr. Kowalenko has focused his interests on hemorrhagic shock, cardiovascular disease, education, international emergency medicine and workplace violence.

He has served on dozens of professional committees at the state and national level and internationally. He is currently a board member of the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He has made more than 100 presentations around the nation and has published articles in peer-reviewed journals and other professional publications, as well as book chapters and numerous abstracts on topics related to emergency medicine.

He also has received numerous awards, including the 2012 Distinguished Educator Award of the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors Academy for Scholarship and the 2011 Ronald L. Krome, MD Meritorious Service Award of the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians. The MCEP award is named for Dr. Krome, former chief of emergency medicine at Beaumont, Royal Oak.
