Oakland University was recently named to Phi Theta Kappa’s 2018 Transfer Honor Roll, a national list that recognizes the top four-year colleges and universities creating dynamic pathways to support transfer students.
To be considered for the honor, participating institutions submit an application detailing their community college transfer programs. Applications are evaluated in the areas of scholarship and financial aid, admissions outreach, student support services, and student engagement opportunities.
Over the past two years, OU has continued to strengthen its support of transfer students by adding dedicated staff in Undergraduate Admissions, Student Financial Services and the Office of the Registrar. Whether students transfer to OU from a community college or transition from another four-year institution, OU transfer team members provide transfer friendly services, including on-site admission decisions, financial aid consultations, unofficial transfer credit evaluations, College Credit Advising Day programs, Transfer Open Houses, Transfer Tuesday programs and a Transfer Welcome event.
"We are continuing to pave the way for community college students to further their education at Oakland University," said Dawn Aubry, OU’s director of Undergraduate Admissions. "Transfer students bring unique experiences and contribute diverse perspectives that enhance the academic community. This honor recognizes the university's ongoing commitment to transfer efforts and promotes the university as a destination for transfer students from around the country."
Phi Theta Kappa President and CEO Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner said the recognition program reflects the growing importance of recognizing and responding to the needs of community college transfers, and promoting and sharing best practices for transfer success. And, she noted that colleges and universities that provide high-quality programs and services to community college transfers benefit from the rich perspective and diversity these students bring to the student body and ultimately to the nation’s workforce.
“In order to ensure their continued success, the Transfer Honor Roll Program identifies colleges and universities that understand the unique needs of transfer students and applauds the dynamic pathways these colleges have created to continue fostering student success among transfer students at the four-year college,” Tincher-Ladner said.
Phi Theta Kappa is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievement of students at associate degree-granting colleges and helping them to grow as scholars and leaders. The Society is made up of more than 3.5 million members and nearly 1,300 chapters in nine nations.
Transfer Honor Roll colleges and universities will be recognized at PTK Catalyst 2018, Phi Theta Kappa’s annual convention, April 19-21 in Kansas City, Missouri.
