In the 2022 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), students were asked three questions regarding their sense of belonging at their institution. Numerous studies show that a greater sense of belonging is positively associated with student success, engagement and retention.

According to the NSSE, 92% of OU first-year international students indicated that they “feel like part of the community at this institution.” This rate was higher than that of both underrepresented minority (URM) students (62%) and non minority students (70%).

Non-URM students rated “I feel valued at this institution” highest (77%), while URM students rated “I feel comfortable being myself at this institution” highest (90%).
