Project: Exploring student performance in online courses

Contributors: Kurtis Kirkpatrick, Clarisse Mikami, Carly Miller, Christina Radowick, Rachel Stagman

Project Description: The primary research questions for the project were “Is there a difference in performance for first semester students between online and in-person courses?” and “When are students most vulnerable when taking online classes?”

This research project focused on analyzing performance outcomes among new undergraduate students who were registered for classes in the Fall 2022 semester. Each course in the sample had at least one online section and one in-person section, with enrollments of at least 30 in each section type.

The Office of Institutional Research, Assessment, and Data Analytics (OIRADA) held a Data Literacy Institute (DLI) during the Winter 2023 semester with Oakland University faculty and staff. Oakland’s DLI participants met weekly and actively partook in class lessons and video tutorials.

Faculty and staff teamed up on three capstone research projects, all centered around student success. The findings from these DLI projects are featured in this first of three Grizz Facts with the intention of sharing the research findings broadly and building interest in data literacy across the university community.
