Each year, Oakland University honors one faculty member and one staff member for outstanding community engagement work, and the work of this year's honorees is certainly no exception.

Earlier this year, School of Nursing Special Instructor and RN/BSN Completion Sequence Track Coordinator Kimberly Holka, DNP, MSA, RN, CNE, PHNA-BC, was presented the 2024 Community Engagement Faculty Award and School of Health Sciences Assistant Dean Leigh Settlemoir, Ph.D., MBA, SPHR, was presented the 2024 Staff Excellence Award in Community Engagement.

Kimberly HolkaWith an extensive network of community partners in Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties, including the American Red Cross, the Macomb County and Oakland County Health Departments, Region 2 North Healthcare Coalition Advisory Planning Board, and many area hospitals, Dr. Holka has been instrumental in training on campus for "Narcan," "Epi-pen," and "Stop the Bleed."

In service to the greater community, she works extensively with the Macomb County Health Department Medical Reserve Corps, local emergency managers, trauma program coordinators, and police and fire departments on mass casualty and active shooter training exercises. she also brings disaster preparedness presentations to many students and children in various area schools and has initiated affiliation agreements with local schools, hospitals, community colleges, and city/county service departments.

Dr. Holka has worked with Career Services to offer a Career Fair for undergraduates. This innovation served students and produced several referrals for future clinical partners and sites.


Leigh Settlemoir

Leigh SettlemoirDr. Settlemoir has presented her research on higher education leadership at national and international conferences.

She currently serves as the grants liaison between the Scientific Advisory Committee and the Governing Board of Sky Foundation, whose mission the early detection, prevention, and treatment of pancreas cancers. In addition, she also serves on Sky’s Governing Board.
