Colleagues,
It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the death of Professor Emeritus Sid Mittra, who passed away on May 11, 2022. Dr. Mittra joined the Oakland University community in the Collage of Arts and Sciences on August 15, 1966. During his tenure, he served as Professor, Chair and Associate Dean in the Department of Economics until his retirement on August 14, 1996.
Shortly after his arrival to OU, Dr. Mittra stepped forward as one of the founding fathers of the School of Economics and Management, which would later become the School of Business Administration.
Throughout his career, he was widely respected as a well-organized, articulate and approachable instructor who emphasized critical and analytical thinking among his students. Outside the classroom he was active with department, school, university and community organizations and activities.
Dr. Mittra also mentored and inspired many colleagues by sharing his expertise, providing patient and objective advice, and encouraging others’ professional success. His own accomplishments included extensive scholarly publication and media appearances, both of which helped elevate Oakland’s reputation as a distinguished university.
A memorial service for Dr. Mittra will be held at a later date. The University community extends heartfelt condolences to the Mittra family and friends during this very difficult time.
Sincerely,
Ora Hirsch Pescovitz, M.D.
President
