Campus directory to welcome submission of preferred first name information

Faculty and staff will have the ability to replace their legal first name in the campus directory with the first names by which they prefer to be addressed

In conjunction with Oakland University’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, faculty, staff and students will have the ability to update their preferred first names in the campus directory beginning on Wednesday, April 12, 2023. The process is designed to help fellow campus community members know how individuals prefer to be addressed.

Those interested in replacing their legal first name with a preferred first name in campus directory records are asked to first review the Preferred Name Policy. Changes can then be made using the following instructions:

  1. Log into MySail.
  1. If necessary, click on the "Welcome" tab at the top left of the window that opens.
  1. In the "My Details" content area, click on the "Display or edit your personal information" dropdown menu.
  1. In the dropdown content area, click on the the blue pencil next to your listed first name.
  1. In the window that opens, click on "Edit" at the top right of the "Personal Details" content area.
  1. In the pop-up window that opens, complete the "Preferred First Name" text field at lower left.
  1. Click “Update.”

Individuals interested in changing their middle names to middle initials or vice versa are asked to email a request to [email protected] and include their Grizzly ID numbers. Inclusion of middle name information is recommended for identification purposes. 

Individuals making changes to their name information through this new process should allow up to 24 hours for the update to occur in the on-line campus directory. Those with questions  are asked to contact Human Resources at (248) 370-3675 or [email protected].
