Patient Care Technician (PCT)

Patient Care Technician Overview
The Patient Care Technician program provides students with the entry- level knowledge and clinical skills necessary to enter the healthcare field as Patient Care Technicians in hospitals, sub-acute, and rehabilitation care setting. Patient Care Technicians are integral members of the healthcare team and work with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to oversee and monitor patients. As a vital member of the healthcare team, they provide direct patient care such as, but not limited to taking vital signs, specimen collection and comfort measures.

In addition, Patient Care Technicians are trained in phlebotomy and electrocardiography. Excellent preparation for entry into any nursing program, with salary ranges for PCT’s around $14.00-$16.00 per hour. Students must complete 304 hours to successfully complete this program.

Course Description
This course will introduce the theoretical applications and techniques related to the role of the Patient Care Technician. It involves multi-skilled direct and in-direct patient care responsibilities including but not limited to diagnostic procedures such as 12- Lead electrocardiography, phlebotomy, and specimen collections. Emphasis will be placed on safety, documentation, standard precautions, legal and ethical considerations, and OSHA standards. There will also be a review of Nurse Assistant competencies. Application of course content will be reinforced in the supervised clinical setting.

Graduates of this program are eligible to take the following certification exams: 
  • EKG Technician
  • Phlebotomy Technician
  • AHA Basic Life support for Healthcare provider
  • Certified Patient Care Technician

Program Duration: 6 Months

Admission Requirements
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED certification
  • PCT application
  • CNA Certification
  • Criminal background check
  • Health Screening, including TB skin test
  • Flu vaccination (during applicable semester)
  • Urine drug screen

PCT Training Tuition Cost for students without CNA certification
$3,500

Total instructional hours: 462

Total continuing education credits: 46.2

Training program includes:
  • CPR training, textbooks, stethoscope and uniforms
  • Students must complete the CNA portion to be eligible for the PCT program
  • CNA course completion
  • Daily care including bathing, feeding, and dressing
  • Care of the patient with acute/chronic illnesses
  • Application of hot and cold treatments
  • Safety with patient transfer and ambulation
  • Range of motion exercises

Certification
Upon completion of the Patient Care Technician program, students will receive an Oakland University School of Nursing Certificate of Completion.
How to Apply
The School of Nursing Continuing Education will begin enrolling students for this program on April 25, 2016. Classes will be held at our Focus: HOPE facility in Detroit, MI.
