In honor of his late wife, Peter Webster has established the Ellen Marie Eland and Peter Webster Nursing Scholarship Endowment. This endowment reflects not only the enduring love Peter holds for Ellen, but also their shared commitment to the nursing profession and the education of aspiring nurses.

A Lifelong Dedication to Nursing

Ellen Marie Eland, originally from Sterling Heights, was a proud alumna of Oakland University’s School of Nursing, having graduated in 1991. Years earlier, she completed her registered nursing degree from Henry Ford Hospital and continued working while earning her Bachelor of Science from OU. Her remarkable 51-year career at Henry Ford Health System showcased her unwavering dedication to her patients and her profession.

Peter fondly recalls Ellen’s career, noting, “Ellen loved nursing, especially surgery. Every day presented a new challenge, from routine operations to emergency trauma cases involving stabbings and shootings. She thrived in this environment, always eager to learn and help.”

Ellen’s legacy is marked by her mentorship and teaching, qualities that made her a respected figure among her colleagues. Her contributions to nursing were not just professional but deeply personal, as she built lasting relationships and touched many lives. Ellen’s dedication extended beyond the hospital, and she maintained her energy and passion for life until her passing in September 2023.

The Genesis of a Scholarship

The inspiration for the scholarship struck Peter one evening as he reminisced about Ellen and her love for nursing. A long-term board member of the Boys and Girls Club of Royal Oak, Peter frequently conversed with Glenn McIntosh, OU’s senior vice president for Student Affairs and chief diversity officer, during club luncheons. These discussions laid the groundwork for the scholarship.

“I knew Glenn was associated with Oakland University,” Webster recalls. “I mentioned my idea to him, and he shared how he had created a scholarship in honor of his sister. Glenn guided me through the process and introduced me to the right people.”

Peter’s visit to the Oakland University School of Nursing solidified his decision. He was impressed by the state-of-the-art facilities, particularly the simulation labs that replicate hospital environments. “The nursing facility is magnificent,” Webster says. “Seeing the students in action, it felt like a true hospital ward, complete with all the necessary medical equipment. It reminded me of how much Ellen loved her work.”

Building a Legacy

The Ellen Marie Eland and Peter Webster Nursing Scholarship Endowment is designed to support nursing students, with a preference for those interested in surgical assistance. The scholarship will be awarded to students enrolled in the School of Nursing who demonstrate exceptional leadership on campus or within their community.

“Peter’s vision to honor his late wife is a testament to his character and his unwavering love for Ellen,” McIntosh says. “I am grateful that Oakland University can support and bring to life this beautiful vision. This scholarship will help future nursing students pursue their dreams and continue the compassionate care that Ellen exemplified throughout her life.”

Michael Westfall, vice president of University Advancement, adds, “The Ellen Marie Eland and Peter Webster Nursing Scholarship Endowment is a significant addition to our School of Nursing. It reflects the enduring impact of Ellen’s career and her passion for surgical nursing. Peter’s generosity will enable us to support students who demonstrate exceptional leadership and have a keen interest in the operating room. This endowment not only honors Ellen’s legacy but also strengthens our commitment to providing top-notch education and training to our nursing students.”

A Love Story Remembered

Peter and Ellen’s story is one of love, dedication and mutual respect. They met on a blind date arranged by mutual acquaintances, bonding over shared values and interests. Ellen’s love for nursing and Peter’s admiration for her work created a powerful synergy that defined their life together.

“Ellen had an instinct for medicine,” Webster shares. “She was attentive, eager to learn and always positive. Her colleagues admired her, and her patients trusted her. She had an extraordinary ability to connect with people, whether in the operating room or at home.”

With this endowment, Peter secures the legacy of compassion, dedication and excellence established by Ellen, ensuring it will continue to inspire and support future nursing generations. Not only does it honor her career, but it also commemorates the love and partnership she shared with Peter. As beneficiaries of this endowment, future nursing students will carry forward Ellen's values and passion, perpetuating her legacy of compassionate care and commitment to excellence.
