The Pawley Lean Institute has developed a program that encompasses Career Services elements into the Human Resource Development (HRD) program.
Beginning in the fall of 2022, HRD students, as part of the Internship Course, will complete a Personal Career Development Plan. AT&T has provided a Workforce Readiness grant of $10,000 to fund the program.
“Oakland University has quality students, and we are so enthused to see them work with both Career Services at Oakland University and industry mentors as means of preparing for the next steps in their career,” said Dave Lewis, president of AT&T Michigan.
Career Services and a Pawley Lean Institute Coordinator will work hands on with students to update/develop a professional resume. Students will also be counseled to create a 30 to 60 second elevator pitch that can be used at Career Fairs or when networking with contacts for job opportunities. There will also be a personal financial planning segment built into the program.
Following these sessions, students will be paired with industry professionals to pitch their elevator pitch and complete a mock interview in a one-on-one session.
“The goal of the Pawley Lean Institute has always been to provide differentiation for our students as they prepare to enter the workforce,” said Dennis Wade, director of the Pawley Lean Institute. “This program does exactly that for every HRD student as they prepare to graduate.”
“I agree,” added Denny Pawley, founder of the Pawley Lean Institute. “This really is getting our students career ready and expands the reach of the Institute, I am very pleased to see this program touch so many of our graduating students.”
In the past 12 months, 94 Human Resource Development students have completed the Internship Course that will now have the Personal Career Development component integrated into the curriculum.
“As we prepare students with a hands-on internship for practical experience, we now provide them the tools to seek full time employment with their HRD degree,” said Dr. Bill Solomonson, an associate professor in the Department of Organizational Leadership. “The students are the real beneficiaries of the Pawley Lean Institute, Career Services, the Department of Organizational Leadership, and industry mentors integrating their expertise with this program.”
