In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Oakland University will host a virtual talk by Chinese American painter Siyan Wong. The talk will be held via Zoom on Monday, May 23, from noon-1 p.m.
Born in a small city in China in 1974, Wong immigrated to the United States in 1985. Her parents left China in search of better opportunities for themselves and their children, but didn’t envision a better life to be possible being an artist.
Wong has achieved considerable success, with her paintings being shown at the Equity Gallery of New York and New York Arts Center. In addition, she has spoken about her art at the Asia Society New York, the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) and other venues. Her work is supported by the Asian Women Giving Circle and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.
Wong’s paintings explore the human experience with a focus on issues facing women, as well as people who are elderly, low-income or homeless. Ultimately, she asks, “What is justice?” and “What is happiness?" To learn more about Wong and her work, visit siyanwong.com.
