On Monday, February 21 at 8 a.m., Oakland University and Uzhhorod National University in Ukraine will host a virtual event to foster ties between the two schools and introduce Ukrainian students to educational offerings at OU.

The event, which will be held via Zoom, will share information about OU’s graduate programs, study abroad opportunities and ESL classes.

OU Biology Professor Taras K. Oleksyk, a native of Ukraine, is one of the event’s organizers.

“Ukraine is a major European country with strong undergraduate education in the STEM disciplines,” said Oleksyk. “However, it lacks some of the technology and opportunities to engage in the worldwide scientific communities. Oakland University can help young aspiring scientists continue to grow to their potential.”

OU continues to develop its partnership with Uzhhorod National University based on the Memorandum of Understanding signed two years ago when Uzhhorod President Volodymyr Smolanka visited Oakland’s campus. OU and Uzhhorod also collaborated on a research study of Ukraine’s genetic diversity published in January 2021.

"One of the key ways OU engages globally and attracts students from around the world is through agreements with our international partners,” said Rosemary Max, OU’s Executive Director of Global Engagement. “We are pleased to be exploring this partnership with UzhNU in Ukraine."

Along with Max and Oleksyk, OU speakers will include Todd Steele, Coordinator of Graduate Program Recruitment, and graduate students Khrystyna Shchubelka and Siobhan Banfiled, both of whom came to OU from Ukraine.

Speakers from Uzhhorod National University will include Myroslava Lendel, Vice President for Research and Education, Yaroslava Hasynets, Dean of the Department of Biology, and graduates from the school’s the Biology Department, Medical Department, and International Medical Department.
