Nu Omega, the OU chapter of the national political science honor society Sigma Pi Alpha, hosted a research symposium and poster contest at OU in April where 14 students presented their research.

For the 10th consecutive year, Pi Sigma Alpha — the national political honor society for college students — has recognized Oakland University’s Nu Omega chapter with a Best Chapter Award.

The award is given annually to chapters that are exceptionally active in their universities and communities, and exhibit high levels of energy and creativity in furthering the goals of Pi Sigma Alpha.

“It’s very gratifying to receive this award because our chapter put in a lot of work in the last year to provide opportunities for students to connect with each other and with faculty outside of the classroom, and to recognize and celebrate all of the undergraduate research that continues to be a highlight of our department,” said Nicole Asmussen Mathew, associate professor of political science at OU.

Dr. Mathew serves as the faculty advisor to the OU chapter and was recognized by Pi Sigma Alpha for her extraordinary leadership and dedication to Nu Omega. The honor society also recognized the contributions of the chapter’s student officers: George Zora, Brooke Summer, Sam Palmeter, and Matthew Staley.

“We were particularly impressed with the (OU) chapter’s achievements in developing activities supporting student career development, especially given the significant challenges faculty and students around the world continue to face post-COVID,” said Dr. Tanya Schwarz, executive director of Pi Sigma Alpha.

Some highlights from this past year include: developing a student-alumni mentorship program, which kicked off with a speed networking event at Meadow Brook Hall last fall; sending six students presenting research at the Pi Sigma Alpha National Undergraduate Research Conference in Washington, D.C. last February; and hosting a research symposium and poster contest at OU in April where 14 students presented their research.

“We are exceptionally proud of our amazing faculty and students,” said Dr. Ora Hirsch Pescovitz, president of Oakland University. “They are truly exceptionally dedicated and their commitment to scholarship is in a class of its own.”

The Best Chapter Award includes a cash prize of $500 for the chapter, as well as an additional $200 to the advisor for their service. In addition, winners will be featured in the American Political Science Association’s magazine, Political Science Today.
