Oakland University President Ora Hirsch Pescovitz says the current political climate makes it more important than ever that we educate the next generation of young adults to exercise their civic rights, encourage them to express themselves responsibly and support their efforts to participate in and lead our democracy into the future.

Oakland University President Ora Hirsch Pescovitz is one of 92 college presidents who have joined the group known as College Presidents for Civic Preparedness.

Member presidents engage in peer learning, exchange ideas and best practices, and look for ways to collaborate with students and faculty on their home campuses.

This is a movement of college and university leaders who are dedicated to advancing critical thinking, free expression and civic discourse on their campuses. See the list of participating presidents at the group’s website.

The consortium is convened by the Institute for Citizens & Scholars and is guided by three civic commitments:

  1. Educating for democracy is central to our mission
  2. We will prepare our students for a vibrant, diverse and contentious society
  3. We will protect and defend free inquiry.

“The values that guide College Presidents for Civic Preparedness are ones that we have long embraced and encouraged at Oakland University,” said Pescovitz. “So, being a member of this ever-growing list of fellow educational leaders is a natural fit, aligning with my personal leadership goals and objectives and those of our respected Center for Civic Engagement.”

Pescovitz says the current political climate makes it more important than ever that we educate the next generation of young adults to exercise their civic rights, encourage them to express themselves responsibly and support their efforts to participate in and lead our democracy into the future.
