The Michigan salmon population has recently been shrinking due to the negative impact of an invasive species found in Lake Michigan.
Last school year, middle school students at Four Corners Montessori Academy rallied together to make a difference! Students took part in Michigan's Department of Natural Resources Salmon in the Classroom program to help combat the problem. As part of the project, students raised chinook salmon eggs in their school environment, then when the salmon reached adulthood, the group released the fish into the wild. The hope is that the salmon will begin to reproduce in order to help rebuild its population in Michigan lakes.
This year, middle schoolers are once again participating in the project, which will help raise more salmon to aid in the repopulation effort.
