Oakland University faculty who have successfully taken their research out into the world and engaged the community will share how they did it during OU’s popular Soundings Series, which will continue on Monday, Nov. 12 with David Dulio, a professor of political science and director of the Center for Civic Engagement at Oakland University.
“I’m going to talk about how I approach giving a public lecture in the community,” Dulio said. “I’m also going to talk about and give a few examples of how what I do is different from what one might get from EJ Dionne or a campaign manager. I try to take information that is publicly available that folks might get when reading about an aspect of campaigns and put it in a broader academic perspective, add to what we get in the popular press by giving it proper context, and do it in an accessible and easily understandable format.
“I will also talk briefly about how I think others can build opportunities to do similar talks,” he added.
Dulio will be presenting from 3-4:30 p.m. in Banquet Room A in the Oakland Center.
“The Sounding Series is a great example of how OU is working to broaden the efforts of faculty who are interested in taking their research interests into the community,” he said. “It’s a great tool for working to build community engagement capacity.”
Dr. Jennifer Lucarelli, associate professor and chair of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences, kicked off the fall Soundings Series on Oct. 10 with a special presentation in Elliott Hall. She discussed her research and community engagement efforts in Pontiac through the Healthy Pontiac, We Can! program.
“We’re looking forward to another great year of the Soundings Series,” said Dr. David Stone, professor of Health Sciences and chief research officer at Oakland University. “We want to deepen the conversation about what it takes to engage the public and policy-makers in the new knowledge and discoveries our faculty make with their research, their scholarship, and their creative artistry.”
