Health care leaders, providers and engaged community members will gather April 30 and May 1 at Oakland University to discuss the importance of addressing the “upstream” social determinants of health in promoting better “downstream” care as part of the 2019 Healthology Symposium series presented by the OU School of Health Sciences and MedNetOne Health Solutions.

According to Kevin A. Ball, Ph.D., Dean of the Oakland University School of Health Sciences, the Healthology Symposium — “where science, practice, and social interests meet” — provides a culminating focus for faculty, students and community partners to celebrate impactful research and scholarship that affect health outcomes.

“This symposium is a call for public awareness and professional action and is an outstanding way to bring together collaborators, in purpose for health,” Ball said. “We are pleased to partner with MedNetOne Health Solutions to bring the issue of social determinants of health to the forefront through this event.”

The event begins with an evening public forum with reception that is free and open to the public at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30. That event takes place in the Oakland Center Banquet Rooms at 433 Meadow Brook Road in Rochester, Mich.

The public forum will dive into the importance of collaborative medical settings in the battle over community health crises, including a keynote address on “How Diagnostic Medical Teams Improve Care” from Michael Laposata, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Pathology at The University of Texas Medical Branch.

Then, on Wednesday, May 1, running from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., there is a symposium offering six CME credits to health care professionals for the registration fee of $150. That part of this year’s event is moderated by Detroit television personality Lila Lazarus and includes a morning keynote address, interactive breakout sessions for developing professional action and panel discussion addressing social determinants of health. It takes place in the Human Health Building at 312 Meadow Brook Road in Rochester, Mich.

“Healthology is a much needed, population-health focused event that uses dialogue, shared research and experiences, and collaboration after the symposium to impact the health of our community,” according to MedNetOne CEO Ewa Matuszewski, who also serves as Board Chair on the OU School of Health Sciences Advisory Board. “MedNetOne is privileged to again sponsor Healthology and play a role in bringing the healthcare community and the community at large together to identify solutions to health and well-being challenges caused or exacerbated by social determinants of health.”
