Take Root, a contemporary dance company-in-residence at Oakland University, will perform on Aug. 2 at The Cube in Detroit and host their third annual PD Expo Day on Aug. 10 at the OU Recreation and Well-Being Center.

Take Root, a contemporary dance company-in-residence at Oakland University will present an evening of movement and dance at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 2 at The Cube at the Max M. & Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center in Detroit.

Take Root is thrilled to be returning to The Cube for our season opening concert,” said Associate Professor of Dance Ali Woerner, who co-founded Take Root in 2013 with fellow Associate Professor of Dance Thayer Jonutz.

In addition to live music, the unique program will also include the premiere of two new works: In Dreams and One Fish Blue Fish.

In Dreams visits the unconscious world of dreams — their obscurity, their beauty, their surreality, and the impossible made possible,” Woerner said. “The music, composed by Take Root Composer Jon Anderson and performed live by Anderson and Take Root company musician Danny DeRose, adds an element of visceral rhythms and transports the audience into a new journey.”

The second work, One Fish Blue Fish, is based off the unique, quirky, hysterical and thoughtful children Take Root has worked with through its Arts Education Outreach Program.

“Again featuring an original score by Jon Anderson, this playful and fast-paced dance will be entertaining and moving for all,” Woerner said.

Tickets are $15 and are available at dso.org or by calling 313-576-5111.

Participants will have also have the opportunity to perform in a talent show.

“This is a wonderful way to show off your hidden talents,” Woerner said. “Any form of talent is welcome and encouraged.”
