Working together to remain vigilant and responsive

Thursday, October 13, 2022

Two weeks ago, there was an interaction involving a non-OU student at the Oakland
University Recreation Center. The Rec Center staff recognized the non-OU student as
someone who had previously gained unauthorized access to the center.

A staff member called the OU Police Department and officers arrived to provide
assistance. Subsequently, an interaction with the non-OU student and a police officer
ensued. The details of this interaction are still under review, including conversations with
the non-OU student involved, OU Police Department, OU Rec Center staff and the Dean
of Students Office. The conversations have been constructive and productive.

We understand that some people in the OU community believe we have been slow to
respond publicly with a statement. In these matters, our intention is always to be
deliberate, thorough and fair. This requires having a clear understanding of the facts
before we make public statements.

Although details of the interaction with the non-OU student are still being reviewed, what
is clear and unequivocal is our values.

We are advocates for diversity, equity and inclusion and we take great pride in being a
warm, safe and welcoming community. We will continue to pursue these values for the
diverse range of students, faculty, staff, and visitors whose presence and voices are an
essential part of the OU community mosaic.
