Take Twenty: 20th Anniversary Celebration of OU Recreation and Well-Being

When the Recreation Center doors opened in 1998, Director Greg Jordan recalls being the sole employee. Today, Recreation and Well-Being has 14 full-time staff and two graduate assistants, and is the second largest student employer on campus with more than 150 student employees. The department boasts 307,882 total visits, which include current students, employees, alumni, community members and future students.

According to the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association, Oakland University is in the 75th percentile for employee usage of a campus rec center. Within the past five years, OU has become a leader in the nation by allowing free memberships for benefit-eligible employees (see whitepaper for reference).

While the department name was Campus Recreation for many years, the name was updated to University Recreation and Well-Being in May 2016 to reflect the integrated mission with recreation and wellness efforts. Rec Well has established partnerships with Environmental Health and Safety, the American Cancer Society and the CVS Foundation for Tobacco and Smoking Initiatives on Campus, which granted $20,000 to create a smoke-free campus at OU. Rec Well provides 500+ annual certifications for students and the community, which include: CPR/AED, Certified Lifeguards, SAFE Training, Mental Health First Aid, Personal Trainers and Peer Educators through NASPA/BACCHUS.

We welcome you to join us as we celebrate our 20th anniversary.
