This year marked the first National Security Agency (NSA) GenCyber teachers camp offered through the School of Engineering and Computer Science at Oakland University.

The 40-hour, five-day intensive learning camp consisted of four major components; Cybersecurity, Cryptography, Cyber Ethics and Online Behavior and Programming. The camp culminated in a lesson plan presentation that was shared with teachers to take back to their schools and use in K-12 education.

According to Rochester High School teacher Karen Malsbury, those who participated in the camp left with “a plethora of resources to use back in the classroom, career awareness in this emerging field and amazing contacts through the School of Engineering and Computer Science at Oakland University.”

Dr. Huriong Fu, Director, Center for Cyber Security and professor of Computer Science and Engineering and Marianne Donoghue, Assistant Director of Outreach from the Computer Science and Engineering Department led the camp along with a group of Ph.D. students, Ali Alshehri, Hani Alshahrani, Abdelnasser Bani Hani, Raed Alharthi and Assistant Professor Dr. Anyi Liu.

Malsbury said the GenCyber Teachers Camp leaders “provided a world class program that we are excited to adopt, embed and develop in our classrooms next year.”

While this is the first camp for teachers, OU has offered a GenCyber camp for kids for the past three years.
