- 2022-2023: BS In Elementary Education
- 2021-2022: BS In Elementary Education
- 2020-2021: BS in Elementary Education
- A cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of at least 2.80.
- Complete EED 2000 with a minimum grade of B (3.0)
- Complete or place out of MTH 0662 with a minimum grade of C (2.0)
- Complete WRT 1060 with a minimum grade of B (3.0)
- Read the Michigan Code of Educational Ethics
- Complete the Major Standing application form
- Visit your Adviser to turn in your major standing paperwork
- Student Learning & Licensure (SL&L) account, visit sll.watermarkinsights.com is an online assessment tool that every candidate of the initial teacher preparation programs in the School of Education and Human Services (STEP, Elementary, K12, MATEE, MATSE) is required to use. Once you are accepted to the program, you will receive an email from the office of Continuous Improvement (delao@oakland.edu) that will provide you with information to purchase your account.

Music Education

The Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP) is a fifth-year secondary teacher education program leading to recommendation for Michigan secondary provisional teacher certification. This certification is valid for teaching content area majors and minors in grades 6-12, except art, modern language, English as a second language and music, which are valid for grades K-12.
STEP Majors:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- English
- History
- Mathematics
- Modern Languages (French, German, Japanese, Spanish)
- Physics
STEP Minors and Endorsements:
In addition to a student's major, students can pursue additional minors and endorsements in:
- Economics
- English as a Second Language (ESL)
- Integrated Science
- Chinese
- Social Studies
Students interested in STEP should seek academic advising from the College of Arts and Sciences Advising Office until they reach the first education course, SED 3000: Introduction to Secondary Education.
How to Apply to the STEP Program:
The Secondary Teacher Education Program cohort starts each Winter semester. The application deadline every year is October 1. Visit the STEP page for the online application and more information on how to apply.
