Through the generosity of our supporters, over $60,000 in scholarships are awarded annually to undergraduate and graduate students. These awards are made possible through annual contributions and established endowments, which benefit students in perpetuity.

The SEHS Development Team is located in the Dean’s Suite in 415 Pawley Hall. Visitors may park in lot 26, which is located between Pawley Hall and Varner Hall (see map) Parking is also available in lot 29, which is the parking deck on Pioneer Drive, southeast of Pawley Hall. Parking is free.

Louise Coallier Memorial Endowed Award

Eligibility Requirements:

  • enrolled in Elementary Education specializing in language arts, mathematics, modern languages, integrated science, or social studies
  • minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • an essay describing the development of your interest in elementary education

Award Information:
The Louise Coallier Memorial Endowed Award is approximately $1,000. Recipients of this award will not be considered for this award in future years.

Ron Cramer and W. Dorsey Hammond Reading Legacy Fund 

Eligibility Requirements: 

  • current doctoral student in the Department of Reading and Language Arts
  • minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • students must be within the first seven years of their program

Award Information: 
The Ron Cramer and W. Dorsey Hammond Reading Legacy Fund’s annual awards of approximately $1,000 will be distributed to two doctoral students each year. A student may only win this award one time during their degree program.

Jeff Dupuis Award in Human Resource Development

Eligibility Requirements:

  • undergraduate student with a declared minor in Labor and Employment Studies or Employments Studies and Standards
  • minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • written essay of 500-750 words discussing the applicant’s career goals and/or accomplishments as they relate to the study of labor and work to facilitate the success of the American worker

Award Information:
The W. Jeff Dupuis Award in Human Resource Development of approximately $1,000 will be distributed to up to two students annually. Recipients of this award may reapply in future years.

Barbara and Allen Gough Endowed Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • undergraduate student majoring in human resource development
  • minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • previously had their studies interrupted for 2 years or more

Award Information:
The Barbara and Allen Gough Endowed Scholarship award is approximately $8,500. Recipients of this award may reapply in future years.

Sidney W. Graber Memorial Award

Eligibility Requirements: 

  • pursuing a graduate degree in Special Education in the Department of Human Development and Child Studies
  • minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • preference is given to student who have completed at least 12 hours of graduate coursework
  • financial need is not required but may be considered

Award Information:
The Sidney W. Graber Memorial Award is for approximately $1,000 and is given to one student each year. Recipients of this award will not be considered for this award in future years.

Harry Hahn Reading Endowment Award

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Ph.D. student, full-time or part-time faculty members in the Department of Reading and Language Arts.

Award Information:
The Harry Hahn Reading Endowment Award will be used to pursue scholarly, teaching, or service activities in reading, writing, and language arts. The award amount will depend upon the needs outlined in the proposal; the maximum amount awarded in any one year is $1,500.

Keane/Demarest Endowment for Berkley School District Student Scholarships

Eligibility Requirements: 

  • a graduate of the Berkley School District
  • a full time undergraduate student planning to major in education
  • have a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • maintain a GPA at Oakland University of 3.0 or higher

Award Information: 
The Keane/Demarest Oakland University Endowment for Berkley School District Students award for approximately $9,000 may be renewed for up to four years if the recipient continues to meet the criteria.

George R. and Helen Klein Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • currently enrolled in the counseling program with a primary interest in substance-abuse counseling, education or treatment
  • minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • financial need may be considered

Award Information:
The George R. and Helen Klein Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to up to two students each Fall and Winter semester. The amount award is approximately $1,000-2,000. Recipients may re-apply for this award in future years.

Jacqueline I. Lougheed Endowed Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements: 

  • graduate student in educational leadership
  • minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • maintain GPA of 3.0 during term of scholarship

Award Information:
The Jacqueline I. Lougheed Endowed Scholarship is approximately $1,000-2,000 each year. Recipients of this award may not re-apply in future years. This scholarship may be used for tuition, books, research or attending a professional conference.

Jacqueline I. Lougheed Master's Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements: 

  • a Master's student enrolled in Educational Leadership
  • completed at least 24 credit hours
  • GPA of 3.3 or above in the program
  • submit an essay detailing the development of your interest in educational leadership, your personal and professional goals, and how you propose to use the award dollars
  • two written recommendation letters from Department faculty members
  • one written recommendation letter from immediate supervisor or school principal at your place of employment

Award Information
This non-renewable award is approximately $1,000 - $2,000 and may vary year to year. The award may be used for:

  • tuition and books at Oakland University, including professional development courses at the University
  • travel and related expenses for attending professional conferences related to educational leadership
  • expenses related to completion of a Master's action research project

Eligibility Requirements:

  • enrolled as an undergraduate in the Department of Teacher Education and Educational Studies in the School of Education and Human Services
  • minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • demonstrate financial need as defined by Oakland University’s Office of Financial Aid

Award Information:
The Meemic Insurance Company Scholarship for Teacher Education is an award of approximately $1,500. Recipients of this award may not re-apply in future years.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • declared minor of Labor and Employment Studies
  • minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • 12 credit hours still to be completed before graduation
  • nominated by two active labor union members 
  • an essay of 500-750 words describing your career goals and/or accomplishments as they relate to the study of labor and work and facilitation of the success of the American worker

Award Information:
The Ken Morris Center for the Study of Labor and Work Scholarship is a $5,000 (amount may vary) award. Students can reapply for this scholarship in future years.

Mary Joyce Pagano Memorial Award

Eligibility Requirements:

  • undergraduate students enrolled in elementary or secondary education
  • student teaching placement in Pontiac or another urban setting
  • minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • financial need is considered but not a requirement for this award

The Mary Joyce Pagano Memorial Award is approximately $1,000 each year. Recipients of this award may re-apply in future years.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • full or part-time undergraduate student with a declared major in the Human Resource Development program
  • minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, as well as in coursework for the major
  • essay detailing the student’s interest in his or her prospective career in the field of Human Resource Development, including insights into the importance of ethics, compassion and service to others

Award Information:
The Gina and Jeff Petherick Endowed Scholarship is approximately a $1,000-2,000 award given each year. Recipients of this award may not re-apply in future years.

Lewis Pino Memorial Scholarship in Science Education

Eligibility Requirements:

  • minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • student in elementary or secondary education with an endorsement in chemistry, physics or integrated science
  • essay of 500 or more words describing interest in the field of chemistry education, physics education or integrated science education

Award Information:
The Lewis Pino Memorial Scholarship in Science Education is an award for approximately $1,000. Recipients are eligible to re-apply in future years.

Toni S. and Kenneth Walters Student Literacy Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • graduate student in the Department of Reading and Language Arts in the School of Education and Human Services or an undergraduate student studying literacy
  • minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2
  • an essay discussing how the candidate serves one’s community, emphasizing a commitment to ethnically and economically diverse communities in urban/metropolitan educational institutions
  • priority will be given to students who have demonstrated service in the field of literacy as an in-service or pre-service teacher either on OU’s campus or through community service

Award Information:
The Toni S. and Kenneth Walters Student Literacy Scholarship annual award is approximately $1,000. Students may only receive one award each academic year but may re-apply in future years.

Luellen Ramey Scholarship for Humanistic Counseling 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • graduate student enrolled in the Department of Counseling, dedicated to pursuing a career in counseling with a humanistic approach
  • minimum of 40 credits earned in the program
  • minimum cumulative GPA of 3.6

Award Information:
The Luellen Ramey Scholarship for Humanistic Counseling award is approximately $1,000 each year.  The candidate for this award can submit an application or be nominated by a faculty member. Recipients of this award may re-apply in future years.

Settlemoir Dzwik Academic Leadership Endowment Award

Eligibility Requirements: 

  • a doctoral student enrolled in the Department of Organizational Leadership in the School of Education and Human Services with a focus on Higher Education
  • minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • a 500 word essay identifying the three top issues leaders in higher education will be faced with over the next ten years and how you can make an impact on these three issues

The Settlemoir Dzwik Academic Leadership Endowment Award is approximately $1,000. Recipients may re-apply for this award in future years.

Nancy Anderson Schmitz Endowed Scholarship for Teacher Education

Eligibility Requirements: 

  • a junior or senior enrolled in elementary education or S.T.E.P. undergraduate programs
  • minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • demonstrated involvement and/or leadership in campus organizations and/ university activities
  • an essay on the challenges and opportunities of teaching in today’s society

  • undergraduate student enrolled in secondary education program, preparing an endorsement in mathematics
  • demonstrate financial needs, as determined by Oakland University’s Office of Financial Aid

  • a preference for students from the Southfield Public Schools

Morgan Behen Memorial Scholarship for Exemplary Students in Elementary Education Endowment

Eligibility Requirements:

  • undergraduate junior or senior student majoring in elementary education
  • minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5
  • an essay of 500 or less words detailing how the candidate developed interest in elementary education, your professional objectives, and how cancer impacted your life, and the reasons you are applying for this award
  • preference will be given to students who have been personally affected by cancer and have a passion for special education

Award Information:
The Morgan Behen Memorial Scholarship award is approximately $10,000 each year. Recipients of this award may re-apply in future years.

The Brady Youngblood Scholarship for Special Education 

 Eligibility Requirements:

  • first semester student studying in one of the degree programs focused on special education, or an undergraduate student with a preference of special education after taking the undergraduate course in special education.
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  • an essay of 500 words or less on a particular topic, such as career goals or the importance of service to the special education population. 

Award Information:
The Brady Youngblood Scholarship for Special Education award is $2,000 each year.

The Tapestry Scholarship for Master of Training and Development Students

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Graduate student in SEHS Master of Training and Development (MTD) in one of the degree programs focused on leadership.
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  • An essay in 500 words of less on the impact the degree, as well as previous experience will have on your future career.

Award Information:
The Tapestry Scholarship for Master of Training and Development Students is approximately $2,500. Recipients of this award may re-apply in future years.

2018-19 SEHS Graduate Tuition Award

Eligibility Requirements:

  • a part or full-time graduate student enrolled in a degree-seeking program in the School of Education and Human Services
  • maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5
  • completed at least one semester at OU
  • describe interest in graduate studies, professional objectives, relevant work experiences, and relevant community service. 

Applicants applying for other awards in the School of Education and Human Services are eligible to apply for the Graduate Tuition Award as well. Students can apply for and be considered for more than one award from the School of Education and Human Services.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • a full time undergraduate student in the School of Education and Human Services
  • cumulative grade point average of at least 2.8
  • completed at least one semester at Oakland University
  • an essay describing how you have distinguished yourself academically. Describe awards and honors you have received, your involvement in the community, and your professional objectives
  • financial need, determined by OU's Financial Aid Office, may be considered, but is not required to apply
