Programs and Support Services
All of our programs and services are aimed at creating a diverse, inclusive and vibrant campus. From hosting celebration months honoring the contributions of various cultures to our training programs, we move to uplift and educate on the importance of each voice in creating our OU community.
- Welcome Reception
Newly admitted CMI Scholars (students who receive OUTAS, Wade-McCree and Detroit scholarships) and their parents attend a Welcome Reception during the summer. Students and parents have the opportunity to meet the Center for Multicultural Initiatives staff and peer mentors, as well as faculty and administrators. An overview of the CMI scholars program is presented, along with specific details about program components. - Welcome Cookout
The Welcome Cookout takes place during the first week of the fall semester known as Welcome Week. It is a collaborative effort sponsored by the Center for Multicultural Initiatives and several student groups. The cookout provides new students with their first opportunity to meet Oakland University faculty, staff and members of student organizations. This event gives new students a positive view of the university and gives Oakland an opportunity to welcome them into the university family. - Hispanic Heritage Month
CMI recognizes the impact of Hispanic culture during National Hispanic Heritage Month. CMI collaborates with students, faculty and staff to educate the OU community and to foster an appreciation of Hispanic culture and its world impact. - African American Celebration Month
CMI honors the historical and cultural contributions of African Americans during National African American Celebration Month. CMI collaborates with students, faculty and staff to educate the OU community and to foster an appreciation of African American heritage and its impact throughout the world. - Keeper of the Dream Scholarship Awards Celebration
Celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by awarding scholarships to students who have demonstrated strong citizenship, leadership and scholarship. - Other Programs
In addition, CMI co-sponsors a host of programs with students, faculty and staff to foster an appreciation of diversity in the OU community.
All programs listed above are open to all students, faculty and staff regardless of religion, sex, ethnicity, or national origin. All are encouraged to attend and participate in programming.
- Peer Mentors Connects CMI scholars to positive academic and social experiences.
- CORE Ambassadors Connects CORE program participants to positive academic and social experiences.
- Diversity Training is offered by CMI for students, faculty and staff, helping the OU community to embrace and value diversity.
