Oakland University-Out and About in the SE Michigan Community

Oakland University works with a multitude of community partners from the SE Michigan area in an ongoing, intentional and mutually beneficial manner. Below are a few highlights of some of the organizations, along with examples of ways we work together (see #7 for the complete community partner listing). 1. Service Learning courses--also see details under the Faculty section

Service Learning Courses take place with many organizations. Below are a few examples of community sites that welcome and work closely with OU students.

One course that showcases our relationship with K12 is the OU Midwest Archaeology Field School that took place summer 2021. Pontiac high school students worked the dig site side by side OU undergraduate and graduate students. Click HERE to see photos and learn more about that course.

3. School District Collaboration

Oakland Schools

Many units across campus work with consultants at Oakland Schools in a variety of ways to streamline and coordinate collaborative grants, programs, summer camps, training, Vocational preparation, professional development, student internships, early childhood services and more. We also work with the departments who serve students who experience homelessness or poverty, those with special needs (up to age 26 in Michigan) and those who are in the foster care system.

Avondale/Oakland University Partnership

Oakland University and Avondale Schools have recently celebrated the fifth year of a productive, mutually beneficial and energetic partnership. We work with a variety of organizations across multiple sectors throughout Pontiac. Years ago, Pontiac was the county seat for Oakland County. Today, many organizations still operate from Pontiac and serve Pontiac-only, all of Oakland County, a tri-county area and/or the SE Michigan area. Oakland University is uniquely situated, geographically and discipline-wise to work with them, no matter who they serve. Below are a few examples of how we work with a community organization. Prescription for Health

  • Health Sessions: With an emphasis on reaching families with children and seniors, the program will offer integrated health education sessions focused on healthy eating across the lifespan; cooking on a budget; creative cooking with herbs and spices; incorporating physical activity into daily living; stress management; relaxation techniques and other topics.
  • Addressing disparities: the program will also increase offerings for fruit and vegetable voucher redemption and engage in community asset mapping to identify additional free and low-cost physical activity opportunities.
