Two alumni from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine were the first OUWB alumni to be recognized at the Oakland University Alumni Night of Excellence.

Fatima Fahs, M.D., ’16, and Jamilah Alhashidi, M.D., ’19, received recognition for “Young Alumni 10 Within 10” awards.

The distinction is reserved for alumni who have graduated within the past 10 years and are 35 years old or younger.

Jordan Nash, development associate, OUWB, said recognition demonstrates how OUWB’s commitment and level of care for its students doesn’t end at commencement.

“Alumni have a special connection with OUWB and are some of its most loyal supporters,” he said.

“It’s nothing short of incredible how much our alumni have already achieved since graduation,” he said. “Each and every one of these achievements reflect positively back on the school of medicine and deserve to be recognized.”

Fahs is a dermatologist currently in practice at Dermatology Specialists of Canton and Livonia. She works as a medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatologist.

Also known as “Dermy Doctor” on Instagram, Fahs has nearly 65,000 followers. She offers advice for skin care and recommends products that she reviews personally. She also offers a subscription box service for skin care-related items that is called “Dermy Doc Box.” (More details about Fahs can be found in a Dec. 21, 2021 inMedicine profile that can be found here.)

Fahs said being recognized at the Alumni Night of Excellence “was an unbelievable honor.”

Fahs is a dermatologist currently in practice at Dermatology Specialists of Canton and Livonia. She works as a medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatologist.

“My time at OUWB is what shaped me to be the physician I am today,” she said. “At OUWB, I not only learned the academic intricacies of medicine, but I also acquired skills that are hard to find in a textbook: what it means to be a good listener, how to empower my patients, what altruism looks like and to always think outside the box.”

“To be recognized by the same institution that has undoubtedly shaped and sculpted my future, is so special,” she added.

Fahs said she has no plans of slowing down.

“I have realized that the first few years of being an attending are much like the first few months of medical school — like drinking out of a fire hydrant,” she said.

“I’ve been getting my feet wet, trying to find stability amidst the chaos and beginning to forge a clearer path forward with bigger goals and aspirations,” she added. “I’m looking forward to the next years ahead, where I hope to continue to refine and perfect my practice as a dermatologist, but also utilize my skillset as an entrepreneur to build on the Dermy Doc Box brand.”

Alhashidi currently is practicing as a family medicine physician for Beaumont Health in Dearborn Heights, according to her LinkedIn profile. She has been in the position since August.

Prior to her current position, Alhashidi served as a chief resident in family medicine at Beaumont Hospital, Troy.

“I went into medicine to help people and that’s something I never, ever want to forget,” Alhashidi said in a Dec. 21, 2021, inMedicine profile that can be found here.

Alhashidi could not be reached for reaction to receiving the alumni award.
