RESEARCH INTERESTS: Twentieth Century Literature and Film, Gender Studies

Dr. Anja Wieden received her Ph.D. in Germanic Languages and Literatures from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her dissertation is entitled Female Experiences of Rape and Hunger in Postwar German Literature, 1945-1960. From 2010 to 2014, she worked both as Program Coordinator of German and faculty advisor for the summer study abroad program in Münster at the State University of New York at New Paltz. Since starting her career at Oakland University in 2014, Anja has published several articles focusing on the narration and discourse of rape in postwar German literature. She is also the co-adviser for the one-semester Oldenburg exchange program in Lower Saxony, Germany. Anja teaches a variety of classes, ranging from beginning to advanced language, literature and culture as well as Business German.

Anja constantly strives to improve as a teacher and advocate for German language, literature and culture. She is a strong advocate of easing students’ financial burden for language textbooks and online materials. Since 2019, Anja and her colleagues have implemented zero-cost materials in the 1000-level language sections, as well as in upper level classes. For GRM 3160/3180 (Composition and Conversation), GRM 3400 (German Culture after 1945) GRM 4080 (Advanced Conversation), and GRM 4570 (Business German), Anja created all materials from start to finish, giving her the freedom to modify her lessons in response to cultural changes and political discourses.

Anja enjoys traveling and has lately developed a deep fascination with Montenegro, Croatia, Albania and Poland. Her most frequented travel destinations are the Austrian Alps and the beautiful city of Vienna.
