All Eyes on the Great Lakes State: Michigan’s Importance in the 2024 Campaign
The Center for Civic Engagement welcomes Karl Rove and Donna Brazile to discuss Michigan's critical importance in the 2024 presidential and congressional campaigns.

Oakland University’s Center for Civic Engagement will host an event focused on Michigan’s significance in the 2024 election on October 30 as part of the Dennis Muchmore Public Policy Series.

Less than one week from Election Day, Karl Rove and Donna Brazile will visit Oakland University’s campus for an engaging conversation about the state of the presidential race and Michigan’s importance in the national political scene. They will offer their assessments of the state of the presidential race nationally and in Michigan. They will also discuss the balance of power in the US House and Senate, as well as what different outcomes could mean for policymaking in 2025 and beyond.

Donna Brazile is a veteran political strategist, Senior Advisor at Purple Strategies, New York Times bestselling author, Chair of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, and sought-after Emmy and Peabody-award-winning media contributor to such outlets as ABC News, USA Today, and The Hill.

Karl Rove is one of the most sought-after political pundits of our time. Rove served as Senior Advisor to President George W. Bush from 2000–2007 and Deputy Chief of Staff from 2004–2007. He was the architect of President Bush’s 2000 and 2004 White House victories.

Michigan is a major focus in the 2024 election cycle. In addition to a very competitive presidential contest, the state is also receiving significant attention at the congressional level. In fact, Michigan has arguably the broadest set of competitive races in the nation – two open US House seats, two other competitive US House seats, an open US Senate seat, and a competitive presidential race.

The eyes of the nation will be on Michigan for the remainder of the election cycle as our state will have a great impact on who holds the majority in the US House and Senate and who wins the White House.

Oakland University has a distinguished track record over many years for hosting events of this nature, including world renowned individuals like President George W. Bush and former Polish President Lech Wałęsa. The crown jewel of this work, however, was serving as host of a 2011 Republican presidential primary debate seen around the world on CNBC. OU has also hosted GOP gubernatorial primary debates in 2010 and 2022. In more recent years, the CCE’s work to make OU a “convener of conversations” about issues of public importance has built on earlier success.

The Dennis Muchmore Public Policy Series was launched in 2022 and is named after a member of the OU Board of Trustees. The purpose of the series is to advance the goals of the Center of Civic Engagement and elevate the reputation of OU by bringing nationally and internationally renowned speakers to campus.
