October is Sustainability Awareness Month – Oct. 4 kick-off rally at Elliot Tower
Our hearts are with the people of Florida, struggling to piece together their lives in the
aftermath of Hurricane Ian. Many of us in the OU community have relatives and friends living in the state who are impacted by the destruction and massive flooding. Please keep them in your thoughts.

The suddenness of how Hurricane Ian intensified is a stark reminder of one of the major threats of climate change – an increased temperature in ocean water, which serves as kindling to feed the colossal force of tropical storms and hurricanes.

Understanding the impact of climate change is one of the many topics to be discussed during the upcoming Sustainability Awareness Month in October. Please join us for a kickoff rally at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 4 at the Elliott Tower. (NOTE: Alternate site in case of bad weather: Oakland Center, 2nd floor.)

Joining me will be members of the Campus Alliance for Sustainability and the Environment
(CASE-OU), Student Congress representatives, and the chairs of OU’s Sustainability Team.
Panel discussions during the month will feature “How to do my part to contribute to a more sustainable society?” and “Think Globally. Act Locally: Conversations with Oakland County Sustainability Leaders.”

“A Living Wall” will be dedicated during the month as a symbol of the university’s commitment to sustainability.

I hope you make a point to learn more about sustainability. I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday at the Elliott Tower gathering.
