Chantel Hammond, MSN, RN, AFN-C, SANE-A, SANE-P is a graduate of the Oakland University School of Nursing Forensic Nursing program.  She obtained her Master of Science in Nursing degree with a focus on forensic nursing in 2021.  Within forensic nursing Chantel’s subspecialty is an advanced forensic nurse examiner. She has experience caring for patients throughout the lifespan who have been impacted by sexual and domestic violence.

As a graduate of OU’s program, Hammond is educated to provide advanced nursing care for patients who are victims of intentional and unintentional trauma as well as all forms of violence and maltreatment.  She has the ability to conduct medical-forensic exams, perform specialized exam techniques, collect evidence, and testify in a court of law- all which contributes to quality patient health and legal outcomes.

Hammond’s graduate level education has prepared her to advance forensic nursing knowledge and science.  “One of the things we focused on in the program was how to be a transformational leader,” Hammond said. “That’s not necessarily something you think about when you’re working as a bedside clinician — that you can do more for patients, not just at the bedside but beyond.”

Since graduating with her MSN, Hammond has used the knowledge and skills obtained within the forensic nursing program to diversify and expand her practice within the specialty. In addition to her role as a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE), she is also forensic nursing faculty at Oakland University, practices as a forensic nurse consultant, and is a Forensic Nurse Specialist for the International Association of Forensic Nurses.
