English Language Arts for Educators

The English Language Arts for Educators, B.A. (ELA, B.A.) degree is a cooperative program between College of Arts and Sciences and the  School of Education and Human Services designed to prepare students for careers as teachers of English in the 5-9, 7-12 grade bands.

Students will earn a B.A. in ELA content, then transition into the English Language Arts for Educators, B.A./Teaching in Secondary Education, MAT, Combined B.A./MAT where preparing for state certification will be the focus. At the undergraduate level, the Combined B.A./MAT program allows students to apply for and receive delayed admission into the MAT program.

Further details on program admission requirements and procedures can be found by consulting advisers in the Department of English, Creative Writing, and Film (Professor Amanda Stearns-Pfeiffer, [email protected]) and the School of Education and Human Services advising office at 363 Pawley Hall, (248) 370-4182 or School of Education and Human Services website.

Major Requirements

Students should meet frequently with academic advisers to plan their course of study. At the undergraduate level, the Combined BA/MAT program allows students to apply for and receive delayed admission in the MAT program. Further details on program admission requirements and procedures can be found by consulting advisers in the Department of English and the School of Education and Human Services advising office at 363 Pawley Hall, (248) 370-4182, or the School of Education and Human Services website

Transfer students should follow procedures specified in the Oakland University Undergraduate Catalog. At least 20 credits in English must be taken at Oakland. While some courses toward an English teaching major may be transferable, students should be aware that our requirements are quite specific and that transfer courses do not always match up well with our requirements. Please see the  Undergraduate Admissions website for more information.
