00:00 >> [MUSIC] Being the first one from

00:03 my family to graduate from high school and college was difficult.

00:08 I knew that school was the key to success,

00:11 but no one really was there to guide me.

00:14 My name is Karla Gudino Avila,

00:17 I am the Assistant Principal at Detroit Cristo Rey High School.

00:22 Not seeing many minority students in college was what

00:26 motivated me to come back to my neighborhood and help them,

00:30 inspire them to go to school that they can do it.

00:34 My mission is to serve.

00:37 I wanted to learn how to be a better leader,

00:41 it just made sense to work towards

00:43 a leadership program now that I'm in a leadership position.

00:49 It's never too late to go back to school and earn your degree.

00:55 My degree of Oakland University helped me be more confident,

01:00 identify what type of leader I am,

01:02 and what are my strengths,

01:04 and what are my areas that I need to grow.

01:07 I hope to become the next principal and

01:12 hope to continue to inspire others to pursue their dreams.
