Ten banners newly installed on light poles circling Bear Lake serve as a vibrant declaration of The OU Pledge, a new initiative dedicated to student success that will officially launch during the Winter 2025 semester.
“The OU Pledge is the university’s commitment to provide every undergraduate student with experiential learning opportunities, such as internships, research and study abroad, that will complement their academic studies,” said President Ora Hirsch Pescovitz, M.D., during her State of the University address on October 10.
Highlighting language from the book “Designing Your Life” by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, the banners feature empowering phrases that “serve as beacons of inspiration for our students, reminding them that their journey starts right where they are,” said Wayne Thibodeau, senior director of the Career and Life Design Center. “Together, we cultivate a community that not only supports academic success, but also personal growth and meaningful connections.”
Drawing on career exploration techniques based on the “Life Design” model and a robust network of contacts, OU students can access diverse internship opportunities across large, medium and small businesses as well as the public sector and nonprofit organizations. By immersing themselves in experience-based learning, internships and research opportunities, students can step confidently into their careers with sharpened skills and invaluable industry relationships, distinguishing themselves in a competitive job market.
“We are thrilled to soon be launching The OU Pledge, a transformative initiative that reflects our deep commitment to student success,” said Glenn McIntosh, senior vice president for student affairs and chief diversity officer. “As our students walk the path along Bear Lake, we hope that the new banners will inspire them to embrace their own journey toward experience-based learning opportunities throughout their time at OU.”
