In celebration of Disability Awareness Month, Disability Support Services and OU Testing Center at Oakland University will welcome the Honorable Richard Bernstein, Michigan Supreme Court Justice, to campus for “Recognizing the Strengths of Disability” from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19 in The Habitat inside the Oakland Center on the OU campus in Rochester, Mich.
“I am thrilled that Justice Bernstein will be speaking to the campus community for Disability Awareness Month,” said Sarah Guadalupe, director of Disability Support Services at OU. “Justice Bernstein is an inspirational and powerful speaker. It is clear that he is a fierce advocate for those with disabilities and disability rights.”
Justice Bernstein is the first and only blind justice ever to serve on the Michigan Supreme Court. Before being elected in 2014, he tirelessly advocated for disabled rights as an attorney heading the public service division for The Sam Bernstein Law Firm in Farmington Hills, Mich.
Blind since birth, Justice Bernstein is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Michigan and earned his juris doctorate from Northwestern University School of Law. In his spare time, he is an avid runner, marathoner and Ironman triathlete.
“Disability can change the world,” Bernstein said. “Thank you to OU for spearheading such an awesome event. I’m looking forward to being there.”
