In honor of Student Employee Appreciation Week (April 14–18, 2025), Oakland University is taking a moment to recognize the incredible contributions of our Graduate Assistants (GAs).
With 400 GAs working during the Winter 2025 semester and 372 in Fall 2024, these student employees are vital to the university’s success—supporting faculty, engaging students and helping the campus thrive.
From research labs and classrooms to student services and administrative offices, GAs bring energy, expertise and dedication to everything they do. According to recent feedback from GA supervisors, their impact is nothing short of extraordinary.
“Our GA Claudia has been the most reliable, astute and professional person I have worked with,” said Kuniko Nielsen, chair of the Linguistics Department. “She brings innovative ideas and positive energy to every project.”
Faculty and staff consistently praised GAs for their enthusiasm, leadership and drive. From managing projects and tutoring students to supporting event planning and contributing to groundbreaking research, GAs are making meaningful contributions across campus.
“Kaycee Miller has gone above and beyond helping students navigate their first-year experience,” shared Tom Giberson from Organizational Leadership. “Her empathy and initiative have created a supportive environment for our new students.”
Graduate Assistants themselves echoed this sense of growth and fulfillment. Many shared how their roles have expanded their professional skills, built confidence, and deepened their academic journeys.
“My position has helped me build my confidence, grow my communication skills and affirm my career goals,” said Crystal Callaway, a Clinical Mental Health Counseling student.
For many, the GA experience goes beyond a job—it’s a launching pad for future success.
“I’ll have my first ever publication this year,” said Morgan Horning, a Special Education GA. “This position has helped me grow academically, personally and professionally.”
As Oakland celebrates this week, campus community members are encouraged to join the effort in recognizing the GAs who make Oakland University stronger, smarter and more connected.
Graduate Assistants are an essential part of OU—and they are appreciated not just this week, but all year long.
