Oakland University and Ascension Providence Rochester Foundation have partnered to offer Mental Health First Aid trainings throughout the month of October.
Created by the National Council for Behavioral Health, Mental Health First Aid teaches individuals how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders in adults.
Trainings will take place in person from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. in 218 South Foundation Hall on the following dates:
Note: Trainings will also be offered at Ascension Providence Rochester in person from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., on Saturday, October 19 and Thursday, October 24.
The trainings are free and open to OU students, faculty, staff and community members. The October trainings are made possible through generous donations to the Ascension Providence Rochester Foundation.
“The trainings provide the skills needed to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone with or developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis,” said OU’s Director of University Recreation and Well-Being Becky Lewis. “Training is excellent for anyone and is highly recommended for those in helping professions.”
The trainings will be led by OU staff and various community members, who gained certification to teach Mental Health First Aid thanks to support from the Ascension Providence Rochester Foundation.
